Description
A Dirty Chai Latte combines the warm, spicy flavors of traditional masala chai with a shot of rich espresso and steamed milk. This coffeehouse favorite offers the perfect balance of aromatic spices and caffeine kick.
Ingredients
For the Chai Base
- 2 black tea bags (or 2 teaspoons loose leaf black tea)
- 3 whole cardamom pods, slightly crushed
- 2 whole cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/4 inch fresh ginger, sliced
- 1/8 teaspoon black peppercorns
- 1 star anise (optional)
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon honey (or to taste)
For the Latte
- 1 shot espresso (1 oz)
- 3/4 cup whole milk (can substitute alternative milks)
- Ground cinnamon for garnish
- Additional honey or sugar to taste
Instructions
Making the Chai Base
- Combine water and all spices in a small saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add tea bags and steep for 3-4 minutes.
- Remove from heat and strain.
- Stir in honey while still hot.
Preparing the Latte
- Brew one shot of espresso.
- Steam and froth the milk until warm and silky (150-155°F).
- Pour the chai base into your serving mug.
- Add the shot of espresso.
- Slowly pour in the steamed milk, holding back the foam.
- Top with milk foam.
- Garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.
Notes
- For a stronger chai flavor, steep tea for up to 5 minutes
- For a sweeter drink, add honey or sugar to taste
- Can be served over ice for an iced dirty chai
- Double the espresso shot for an extra dirty chai
